There are over 300 species of stingless bees in the Amazon, the most well-known being the Jataí, Uruçu, and Mandaçaia. Each species produces a unique honey, which is often somewhat thinner, aromatic, spicy, and slightly acidic.

Unlike European honeybees (Apis mellifera), they produce much less honey, sometimes less than a liter per year, and Melipona bees have no stinger. They defend their nest by encasing intruders in propolis and resin or by biting their fur – peacefully, but effectively.

Unlike honey from traditional honeycombs, Melipona honey is stored in small, pot-like wax containers within the nest. The brood combs are usually arranged horizontally or in clusters in the center of the nest, and the bees build their honey pots around and above them.

Our honey is not wild-harvested, but comes from sustainable forest beekeeping: The beehives are located in protected areas of the rainforest, allowing the bees to collect nectar in their natural environment. Harvesting is done by hand, carefully and always in a way that ensures the colony remains healthy and can regenerate.
